  • About Us

As part of a world-renown technological university, the School of History and Sociology (HSOC) is an interdisciplinary unit in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, consisting of scholars and educators from history and sociology. HSOC offers a wide range of programs, from general education courses and undergraduate minors, through our distinctive undergraduate major and our master's and doctoral degree programs in the History and Sociology of Technology and Science (HSTS).

Combining history and sociology, the program equips students to evaluate and engage the complex societal challenges posed by a rapidly globalizing technological world. In addition to blending the humanist perspectives of History with Sociology's analytical methods, our curricula consider subjects such as science, engineering, medicine, computing, business, policy, economics, and the environment. Our newest program, Sports, Society, and Technology, brings together sports studies, science and technology, and urban studies, incorporating faculty from across campus in areas ranging from architecture, public policy, and applied physiology to economies, history, and sociology.

HSOC is the ideal program for students seeking a traditional liberal arts experience and wanting to cultivate practical skills for use in a wide variety of careers.
