  • About Us

Founded by the Sisters of Charity in 1869 as a home for abandoned children, today The New York Foundling offers an expansive array of services for underserved children, families, and adults. We serve thousands of people every year in all five boroughs of NYC, Rockland and Westchester counties, and in Puerto Rico, with programs geared towards:

    • At-risk children and those in the foster care system
    • Families struggling with instability
    • Adults with developmental disabilities
    • Youth involved in the juvenile justice system
    • Infants and toddlers born into difficult circumstances
    • Pre-schoolers in Head Start programs
    • Young scholars in low-income communities

Being one of the largest and oldest charities to serve this unique demographic, we have pioneered many distinctive programs:

    • First charity to open a charter school specially designed to serve children in foster care and the child welfare system. Mott Haven Academy is located in a "green" building that was awarded LEED Gold Certification in 2013.
    • First charity in NYC to operate an overnight summer camp, specifically designed for children in foster care and the child welfare system to instill a sense of self-confidence, resilience, hope and community, despite their difficult circumstances at home.
    • Only charity of its kind to offer 24/7 emergency respite for families in crisis including medical care and educational support for children.
    • One of few charities in NYC to provide comprehensive medical and mental health services to all the children we serve in foster care. This year we're expanding our medical clinics to serve all children in need of medical care.
    • One of few charities in NYC to provide comprehensive housing and social supports to 18-25 year-olds who are aging out of foster care. Through a balance of individual responsibility and community support, we better prepare our young adults for the future.
