  • About Us

Isuroon is a women-led, community-driven organization motivated by the belief that Somali women deserve to be healthy and have a strong voice.  We are a linguistic and cultural bridge connecting women and their families with wellness information, trusted health care providers, financial literacy, civic engagement and leadership. For health care providers and policymakers, we are a partner to improve outcomes and decrease disparity through culturally competent training and research.

Our name, Isuroon, means “a woman who cares for herself.”  With their courage and our resources, Somali women and their families in Minnesota can:

    • Overcome obstacles such as language barriers, racism and religious intolerance
    • Navigate a complex and unfamiliar health care system
    • Become advocates for their own physical, social and financial wellness

Isuroon is a grassroots nonprofit organization working to promote the health, well-being and empowerment of Somali women in Minnesota and beyond. It provides culturally appropriate education, communication, and advocacy for Somali women and health care providers. Taking its name from a Somali word that means “woman who cares for herself,” Isuroon believes that empowering women is the key to building a thriving community.

Founded in 2010, the organization was launched to address unmet health care needs of Somali women. The agency operates on the principle that Somali culture emphasizes different values about medicine, health, and illness than Western medical traditions. Isuroon has earned a trusted place in the community because of its cultural insight and collaborative approach. The organization strives to combat gender inequality and the poverty, illness and social isolation it perpetuates.
