Envision Freedom Fund works alongside impacted communities to dismantle the oppressive and interconnected criminal legal and immigration systems. With freedom as our guiding principle, we invest in innovative campaigns and programs that aim to win long-term, transformative change, while meeting the urgent needs of community members in the present. Our work has always coupled a necessary intervention - freeing people from detention today - with advocacy and public education to achieve radical systems change and freedom for all people.
From 2015 through 2019, Envision Freedom Fund (then known as Brooklyn Community Bail Fund) operated a revolving bail fund in the criminal legal space, paying $5 million to free nearly 5,000 New Yorkers from pretrial detention. In 2018 we launched our immigration bond program to free community members in ICE detention and work to support their critical post-release needs. Our ongoing work to dismantle the intertwined criminal legal and immigration systems includes continued public education and advocacy—in partnership with allies and impacted communities—to influence policy and legislation locally and nationally. This includes campaigns such as Break the Shackles and New York Dignity Not Detention, programs such as Court Watch NYC and our public education work centered on prosecution accountability, immigration enforcement, and pretrial detention amongst other issues.
