    Founded in 1990, NYLAG is a leading civil legal services organization combatting economic, racial, and social injustice by advocating for people experiencing poverty or in crisis. Our services include comprehensive, free civil legal services, financial empowerment, impact litigation, policy advocacy, and community partnerships. NYLAG exists because wealth should not determine who has access to justice. We aim to disrupt systemic racism by serving individuals and families whose legal and financial crises are often rooted in racial inequality. NYLAG goes to where the need is, providing services in more than 150 community sites (e.g. courts, hospitals, libraries) and on our Mobile Legal Help Center. During COVID-19, most of our services were virtual to keep our community safe. NYLAG’s staff of 380 impacted the lives of nearly 129,000 people last year.

    Job description

    The New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) seeks a highly motivated bilingual administrative assistant for a part-time temporary position assisting the Immigrant Protection Unit (IPU) in its representation of individuals and families in applications for immigration relief. This position will assist with data entry, our intake process, and will support our work with community based clinics. This position reports to a Supervising Paralegal and Attorney and is temporary through December 2024. The part-time position hours are set at 10.5 hours a week.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Directly support staff attorneys and paralegal case handlers in affirmative applications submitted to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), by:
      • Assist in putting together applications and preparing them for filing: copying and scanning
      • Scan and distribute incoming mail
      • Contact clients to ensure receipt of appointment notices
      • Assist in preparing files for case closure
    • Support other application processes under attorney supervision. 
    • Assist unit attorneys and case handlers with document translation and verbal interpretation
    • Participate in IPU clinics and consultation days.
    • Administrative tasks such as data entry, tracking case information, scanning documents and uploading to LegalServer
    • Other duties and responsibilities as the need arises.

    Qualifications

    • High school diploma preferred
    • Fluency in Spanish is preferred
    • Experience working with diverse populations
    • Ability to work with individuals with disabilities and seniors in providing naturalization assistance
    • Excellent organization skills
    • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently in an off-site context.

    Salary Range: The current salary range for this position is between $52,571 - $56,835 (before part-time schedule adjustment).

    Benefits:This is a part-time temporary position that does not include benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, paid leave or paid time off.
