POSITION SUMMARY

Buena Vista Horace Mann K-8 (BVHM) is a Spanish Immersion school just blocks away from our Mission Center. The Programs Manager works closely with school and community partners, caregivers, and students to provide high quality, longitudinal writing and tutoring programs at BVHM, both after school and during the school day, for students in grades 3-8. The core of our work is direct service, and this position will lead and support programming for approximately 8-12 hours per week. The ideal candidate is energized by teaching in the public school setting, has a deep commitment to positive outcomes for the students we serve, loves partnering with public school teachers and community-based organizations, and can manage a team with care and concern for everyone’s growth, effectiveness, and wellbeing. The Programs Manager uses student data to identify learning needs and align programming to boost student achievement.

POSITION SNAPSHOT

  • Leads a team to deliver high-quality writing instruction and project-based learning experiences
  • Nurtures strategic school and community based partnerships to support student success
  • Manages a diverse team and supports team members to develop professionally
  • Full-time (40 hours per week), Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (work schedule subject to change based on programmatic needs), some evenings and weekends as required
  • This position is based in an open-office environment with substantial ambient noise and overheard conversations. This role spends substantial time at the BVHM Writers’ Room, located approximately one half-mile from our Mission Center.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Programs Manager reports to the Director of Education and supervises one Programs Coordinator and two AmeriCorps members, as well as interns and volunteers. 


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Planning and Implementation

  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, families, volunteers, interns, and 826 Valencia staff to direct school day and after-school programs at Buena Vista Horace Mann
  • Design and/or implement standards-aligned, culturally relevant, project-based writing curriculum and individualized support
  • Develop and implement long-term goals and objectives to achieve the successful outcome of the programs
  • Develop academic growth plans for students and track progress in conjunction with school staff, caregivers, and volunteers
  • Build relationships with school administration and teachers to plan responsive programming, cultivate strong partnerships, improve alignment, and identify opportunities for family engagement
  • Track student and volunteer data using Salesforce and the Contract Management System of the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth and Families oversee the distribution, collection, entry, and analysis of evaluation data for programs; use the data for continuous reflection, program improvement, and reporting
  • Oversee, directly manage, and support student publishing projects; plan release celebrations to increase student pride and engage families; seek out opportunities to amplify student voices within and beyond the school community
  • Cultivate strong, authentic partnerships with caregivers to improve the program and effectively support students; connect students and families with resources at schools and community-based organizations
  • Maintain strategic partnerships and align programming goals and structure with Jamestown Community Center (school site Beacon Center)
  • Manage components of summer programs in collaboration with other Programs Managers and Directors

Management and Supervision

  • Supervise and support one Programs Coordinator by providing ongoing observation cycles, coaching, and formal evaluations
  • Coordinate and supervise the activities of two AmeriCorps members and assigned volunteers; train, support, and celebrate volunteers to ensure adequate staffing; track volunteer participation in Salesforce
  • Support team to supervise interns and volunteers effectively
  • Build capacity of team to be effective tutors through student work analysis, training, and feedback

Other Duties

  • Actively participate in 826 Valencia meetings, internal committees on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, performance appraisal systems, and other work events, such as DEI trainings, professional development workshops, and the annual 826 National conference
  • Meet all deadlines
  • Maintain updated language about Buena Vista Horace Mann programs for website and publications 
  • Work collaboratively with all staff members to ensure robust programming
  • All other duties as assigned by the Executive Director


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Teaching Credential, English and/or Elementary Education, with CLAD certification required
  • At least five years teaching and/or youth development experience in under-resourced communities
  • Experience as a supervisor or people manager (preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to improve student achievement
  • Familiarity with Google Suite and Microsoft Office programs
  • Experience using Google Classroom and Zoom (preferred)
  • Bilingual in Spanish (preferred)
  • Able to complete a background check and tuberculosis screening; pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records
