    Founded in 2001 and located in Harlem, the Reading Team is a dedicated organization that provides evidence-based literacy programs to children in Pre-K through 5th grades in New York City.

    At The Reading Team, we prioritize the academic growth of our children. With our comprehensive approach, each child receives 90+ minutes of engaging, on-task activities, five days a week. Our programs are thoughtfully designed to focus on essential early literacy components such as phonics, explicit comprehension strategies, oral and written expression, and analytical skills.

    Over the course of our existence, we have proudly fostered substantial literacy growth and academic achievements for over 10,000 children hailing from economically challenged backgrounds and underserved neighborhoods.     Literacy Coach (Afternoon) Description

    Role Overview and Responsibilities:

    In-person. No remote.

    Start Date: Sept. 2024

    You will serve as a member of a 15 person team. As an Afternoon Literacy Coach, you will provide direct literacy interventions to K-5 students, individually or in small groups, at our main site on 370 W. 120th Street, Mon-Fri from 2:30p-6:00p. 

    Key responsibilities:

    * Develop and implement daily lesson plans and activities focused on language arts, reading, grammar, and spelling.

    * Assist students with homework completion.

    * Maintain an orderly classroom that promotes healthy learning practices.

    * Serve snacks to children and clean up preparation and eating areas afterwards.

    * Ensure student safety and supervision at all times.

    Qualifications:

    Bachelor's Degree.

    * At least 1 year of experience working as a teacher, assistant teacher or substitute teacher with children in a school. Candidates with a certificate in early childhood education or who are currently working towards the completion of a certificate are preferred.

    * Demonstrated ability to manage groups of young children using appropriate classroom management techniques.

    * Strong oral and written communication skills.

    * Familiarity with iPad and other digital teaching tools.

    * Strong work ethic and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently.

    * All program staff must be vaccinated; Students and teachers currently have the option of wearing a mask during program session.

    Literacy Coach (Morning) Description

    In-person. No remote.

    Start Date: Sept. 2024

    You will serve as a member of a 15 person team. As a Morning Literacy Coach, you will engage small groups of preschool children in a wide range of lessons and activities that focus on phonemic awareness, letter recognition and other pre-reading skills and develop a natural enjoyment of stories and interactive reading. You will go onsite to our childcare center partners in Harlem a minimum of two days per week for 120-minute sessions (minimum total of 4 hours per week), 9:30-11:30 am, delivering our preschool literacy model. The Reading Team provides its Literacy Coaches with paid professional development.

    NOTE: This role may be combined with the Literacy Coach (Afternoon) role we also have posted for candidates who are interested in working up to approximately 27 hours/week. The Literacy Coach (Afternoon) position is Monday-Friday from 2:30-6:00 pm in person.
