    The Role:

    The Controller will oversee the financial operations of REDF and its affiliate, REDF Impact Investing Fund (RIIF), steward public funding and grants, and ensure accurate financial reporting, robust internal controls, and compliance with all regulatory requirements. This role is critical in managing the organization’s financial resources and in building a strong high performing accounting department able to scale with organization’s growth. You will work closely with the Chief Financial Administrative Officer and other senior leadership. You will act as an effective strategic partner with REDFs Financial Planning and Analysis function.

    You are hands-on with excellent attention to detail and can also see the “big picture.”

    The Responsibilities:

    Financial Reporting and Compliance: You’re are a strong and integral contributor to financially-based decision making, cash management and compliance for REDF and RIIF.

    • Oversee the preparation and presentation of accurate and timely financial statements and reports to the CFAO and RIIFs CFO.
    • In partnership with REDFs Manager of FP&A, monitor and analyze financial performance, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities to improve financial health and achieve organizational goals.
    • In partnership with REDFs CFAO, monitor cash flow and manage the organization’s liquidity to meet operational and strategic needs.
    • Ensure compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements, including IRS, federal, state, and local regulations for 501(c)(3) organizations.
    • Manage the annual audit process and funder audits, working closely with external auditors and ensuring timely and accurate completion.

    Accounting Operations: The organization is growing and your expertise is integral to ensuring continuity of strong accounting operations.

    • Supervise and provide strategic guidance to the Senior Manager of Accounting and Compliance, ensuring efficient and effective day-to-day accounting operations.
    • Develop and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure the integrity of financial data and safeguard organizational assets.
    • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
    • Manages the structural integrity of our accounting systems and partners with external vendor to adapt where needed.

    Grant and Public Funding Management: Over 25% of REDFs demand comes from the public sector.

    • Supervise and provide strategic guidance to the Manager of Revenue and Public Sector Contracts, ensuring effective management of all revenue streams, including but not limited to grants, public sector contracts and major donors.
    • Ensure compliance with all grant and contract requirements, including reporting, invoicing, and financial tracking.
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with funders, partners, and internal stakeholders to support REDF’s funding and revenue goals.

    Team Leadership and Development: Teamwork and collaboration are key to success at REDF.

    • Provide strong leadership, mentorship, and development opportunities to the accounting and finance team.
    • Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture, promoting continuous improvement and professional growth.
    • Manage team performance, setting clear goals and expectations, providing regular feedback through performance reviews and monthly check-ins.

    The Qualifications:

    • 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, with 3+ years of prior Controller and people management experience. 
    • Experience in non-profit accounting and public funding management preferred.
    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and or relevant experience, is required. CPA preferred.
    • Experience managing accounting and financial management systems is required.
    • Advanced skills with Excel, and strong competency with the Microsoft suite of products.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders.
    • Excellent organizational, project management, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
    • High level of integrity and commitment to ethical financial management.
    • Salesforce or other CRM experience is preferred.
    • Experience supervising and coaching others on projects.
    • Able to confidently write and present executive summaries (with little supervision) to senior audiences on complicated topics; builds buy-in through communication; handles sensitive situations with tact and empathy
    • Able to make important decisions under conditions of ambiguity and imperfect information; able to identify and evaluate complicated trade-offs
    • Proficient at autonomously scoping workstreams and projects for self; demonstrates ability to scope work for others; able to identify key questions, key deliverables, and realistic timelines; able to adjust scope depending on skillset and capacity of aREDF staff.
    • Strong collaborator; comfortable working with others that possess a wide diversity of backgrounds, skillsets, and experience; naturally finds ways to upskill others
