    Description

    The Wood County Humane Society (WCHS) Shelter Manager will be responsible for providing leadership and oversight of all WCHS shelter operations, ensuring high-quality animal care, efficient animal flow, outstanding customer services, and responsible allocation of shelter/organizational resources.

    This position will report to the Board of Directors President, and will work in close partnership with the entire Board of Directors and all other WCHS positions.

    This full-time, 40+ hours per week is salaried, and exempt from overtime. Annual salary negotiated and commensurate with education and experience.

    Shelter Operations:

      • Directs and monitors all aspects of animal care, using established best practices in animal husbandry and sheltering this includes cleaning, feeding, housing, intakes, and adoptions.
    • Ensures that operation of shelter is compliant with statutory and regulatory requirements, as well as WCHS mission, values, and policies.
    • Maintains a clean and environmentally safe shelter environment, ensuring safe functioning, on-going maintenance and necessary replacement of all shelter equipment and supplies needed for the daily function of the shelter.
    • Maintains effective inventory control. Receives and tracks shelter inventory and orders supplies to maintain cost-efficient inventory for operations, ensuring that the facility receives competitive pricing. Monitors the control of and accurate reporting of all drugs and medical supplies as required by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
    • Maintains shelter records and statistics that include, but are not limited to, animal population, adoption, euthanasia, transfer, foster and spay and neuter. Prepares management reports and other documentation, as needed. Acts as administrator for the database system.
    • Works with the Board of Directors and all WCHS staff to ensure that the shelter is compliant with all federal, state, local laws and ordinances, as well as OSHA regulations.
    • Collaborates with veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians.    

    Leadership & Management:

    • Supervises all WCHS staff.
    • Prepares staff work schedules and assignments to ensure adequate staffing levels daily to achieve animal and client care goals and a compliant workplace.
    • Hires, terminates, orients, evaluates, trains, disciplines, and mentors shelter staff.
    • Processes payroll.
    • Continuously strives to improve the environment for staff and volunteers and to build a culture of inclusivity, collaboration, respect, accountability, and program excellence.
    • Coordinates the professional development of self, WCHS staff, and Board of Directors.
    • Coordinates internal communication to ensure staff, volunteers, and the Board of Directors are informed of decisions that affect their positions and the organization.
    • Ensures that all current and future shelter program effectiveness is monitored and evaluated on an on-going basis using data-driven methods.
    • Makes recommendations to the Board of Directors on procedures, future directions, programs, fund-raising, outreach in conjunctions with other WCHS staff.
    • Sets performance standards and expectations for the conduct of WCHS staff to ensure excellence in customer and client service, donors, and public perception of the WCHS.

    Advocacy & External Relations:

    • Serves as spokesperson for the organization. Makes professional presentations to members and the public concerning the programs and needs of the organization.
    • Advocates for the WCHS, its mission and programs to local and state elected officials and government entities.
    • Develops and maintains a positive relationship with the community, media, and emergency services either directly or indirectly with a diverse group of stakeholders, strategic partners, and funders, including, but not limited to; the media, business community, police, fire, emergency response teams, department of Mental Health, local hospitals, clinics, and other agencies in the human services field.
    • Oversees the WCHS social media strategies in conjunction with the Board of Directors and all WCHS staff

    Performs any other duties as assigned needed to drive our Vision, fulfill our Mission, and abide by our Organization’s Values.

      Required Education and Experience:

      • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent (post-secondary degree preferred)
      • Have three to five years of shelter management experience (preferred)
      • Maintain a valid driver’s license/insurability and be able to drive personal vehicle for work-related tasks as needed. Must maintain insurance and ability to drive throughout employment.
      • Be certified as Euthanasia Technician or will become certified and maintain certification throughout employment

     Physical Requirements

    Position regularly requires the ability to lift and carry at least 40 pounds. Irregular hours are an occasional part of the job.

    Working Conditions

    Work is performed in an animal shelter setting. There is potential for exposure to allergens, cleaning chemicals, high noise levels, and animals. All staff are encouraged to maintain Tetanus vaccination.

     Resources Provided

    Training, professional development, professional organization fees, and budget for travel are available on a limited basis.
