    Description

    Civil Rights Coordinator

    CAIR San Francisco Bay Area is hiring a Civil Rights Coordinator who will support our civil rights legal services, plan events at community centers and masajid to help educate the San Francisco Bay Area Muslim community about their civil rights, and participate in various coalition and campaign efforts.

    Schedule Type: Full-time (Non-exempt). Occasional evenings and weekends required.

    Location: Based in CAIR's Santa Clara office. CAIR-CA staff are currently working a hybrid schedule, with three days in-person and two days remote.

    Requirements: Ability to travel throughout the Bay Area (vehicle and driver's license required); authorization to work in the United States.

    Reporting Relationships: Reports to the Managing Attorney

    Key Responsibilities

    • Conduct initial legal intakes and follow up with clients and potential clients
    • Coordinate and conduct 'know your rights' events in-person and virtually
    • Assist with grant deliverables, including timely data collection, management, and reporting
    • Conduct initial legal intakes and follow up with clients and potential clients
    • Draft complaints, briefs, letters, memos, and non-legal documents that may include community advisories, issue briefs, and other reports
    • Document complaints of religious discrimination and aid individuals experiencing discrimination
    • Communicate with outside parties including attorneys, employers, law enforcement agents, and administrative agencies
    • Coordinate with other CAIR offices and civil rights organizations on community education
    • Organize and assist with clerkship recruitment and onboarding
    • Assist with calendaring and scheduling internal and external meetings
    • Perform administrative duties within the legal services department including setting up appointments, scheduling internal and external meetings, scanning and routing incoming mail, mailing case filings, and managing larger mailing projects
    • Respond to incoming communications including answering phone calls, maintaining the department's voicemail and email

    Other duties as assigned, dependent on organizational needs and employee skills. All CAIR staff are required to assist in general duties such as answering phones, weekly outreach, and other office tasks.

    Required Qualifications

    • Strong time management skills with a demonstrated ability for meeting deadlines
    • Demonstrated problem-solving skills with outstanding attention to detail
    • Comfort working productively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills including public speaking experience
    • Experience working with people from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
    • Personal accountability and ability to take initiative and direction
    • Basic computer proficiency including knowledge of MS Office, MS Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat
    • Knowledge of cloud applications such as SharePoint and Office365
    • Experience planning events on campuses or in community spaces
    • Familiarity and experience with civil rights issues impacting minority communities including school bullying, employment discrimination, and/or law enforcement harassment
    • A strong commitment to civil rights and CAIR's mission

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Arabic, Farsi/Dari, or Urdu proficiency
    • Experience working in Arab, Muslim, Middle Eastern, and/or South Asian communities
    • Experience working in a non-profit organization or law firm
    • Experience with Canva, Adobe Photoshop, and growth marketing
    • Paralegal training or certification

    Compensation

    • $27-$34 commensurate with skills and experience
