Description

Congregation Beth Elohim (CBE) is a vibrant, cutting-edge Reform synagogue in Park Slope, Brooklyn. We are a welcoming and inclusive community, rooted in Jewish history and identity, and profoundly open to diversity in all its forms. We come together to learn, to pray, to celebrate the rhythm of Jewish time, and to support each other through the joys and sorrows of our lives. We are a spiritual, cultural and intellectual center for Jewish revitalization, fostering community and extending our values of justice, education, and inspiration throughout the neighborhoods where we live and beyond.

Yachad (Hebrew for “together”) is CBE’s Religious Education Program, which serves nearly 500 students in grades K-12.

We are looking to add a part-time educator to our team who will be responsible for leading our Dual Language Alumni classes throughout the 2024-2025 school year in Yachad.

We are hiring for 3 classes which all take place in-person at the following times: 3:30pm-5:00pm Tuesdays (1st graders), Wednesdays (2nd graders), and Thursdays (Kindergarteners). All of the students who will be participating in these classes are alumni of the Dual Language Hebrew Immersion program in CBE’s Early Childhood Center.

This weekly class is is an opportunity for our students to:

  • Maintain their connection to the community they have built over the years
  • Continue engaging with conversational Hebrew (which is not the focus of the larger Yachad program, given our time constraints)
  • Begin learning to read and write in Hebrew (which doesn’t happen in the larger Yachad program until 3rd grade)
  • Connect to Israeli culture, holidays, Torah stories (and more!) through projects, games, songs, etc.

CBE believes in ongoing Jewish exploration and living through deep Judaic and ritual exploration. CBE is committed to Judaism (Jewish experiences and education) that is inclusive and accessible to all.  As a member of the Yachad team, you must have excellent communication and organizational skills, a warm and inclusive demeanor, and an excitement for engaging students and families in Jewish life. If you are a collaborative and flexible Jewish educator, CBE and Yachad wants to hear from you!

Key Responsibilities

  • Create exciting lesson plans, programming opportunities, and act as the point person for our Dual Language Alumni classes.
  • Through an established decoding/encoding (reading/writing) curriculum for this age, our Dual Language Alumni will be engaged with pre-literacy and Hebrew phonics.
  • Work in partnership with Yachad leadership in implementing the curriculum and programming for our learners.
  • Coordinate with the Learning Specialist to ensure curricular content is being presented thoughtfully and in a way that works for a variety of learning styles.
  • Manage class-wide communications to engage families with what is happening in the class.
  • Manage all administrative duties for each class you teach including, but not limited to: regular attendance, follow-up communications with families, etc.
  • Create strong relationships with students & families, and work to encourage relationships between the two.  We teach kids, but we want to engage the whole family!
  • Proactively, and consistently engage parents in communication about their child(ren)’s progress - in-person and/or electronically.
