    Description

    Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Legal Director will oversee the organization’s impact employment law investigations and individual cases; train and support staff on employment laws; facilitate and support communication of legal processes with workers; and maintain organizational compliance.

    Qualifications:

    • Active membership in the CA State Bar is required;
    • At least 3 years of legal services experience is required;
    • Demonstrated knowledge of employment or labor law;
    • Demonstrated knowledge of the policies and procedures of the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement;
    • Relevant advocacy, policy, project management, and coalition-building experience;
    • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;
    • Relevant experience developing and implementing strategies in investigations or cases to create systemic change in industry or workplace;
    • Ability to think strategically, and to lead and work collaboratively with others:

    Duties

    • Identify and assist the development of the legal strategy of the organization; 828 W. Washington Boulevard ▪ Los Angeles ▪ California ▪ 90015 ▪ www.janitorialwatch.org
    • Work with Executive Director and Field Director to implement legal strategy of the organization;
    • Support Field Director, Field Coordinators, and Investigators with identifying and developing evidence for strategic cases;
    • Working with Executive Director and Field Director to identify appropriate legal processes for investigations and strategic cases;
    • Support, train, and monitor integrity of information developed in investigations;
    • Work closely with Field Director to develop, implement, and maintain investigative systems;
    • Train staff on wage and hour laws, retaliation, discrimination, legal processes, and other related laws;
    • Supervise and coordinate individual wage claim cases and process;
    • Develop, train and supervise wage claim advocates;
    • Design and oversee peer to peer self-help clinics;
    • Train, support, and supervise legal coordinators;
    • Support supervision of team members and direct supervision of team members as necessary;
    • Support, design and review legal content of worker education, training, and materials;
    • Monitor public policies and legislation;
    • Analyze and recommend support or opposition of legislation or policies to the Executive Director;
    • Testify in support of legislation or policies that are strategic to the organization’s goals;
    • Draft letters in support of legislation;
    • Assist in the preparation of worker testimony in support of legislation or policies that are strategic to the organization's goals;
    • Train and support staff on legislative visits;
    • Assist in the development and implementation of the organization’s communication goals;
    • Maintain and train staff on key developments in legislation, policies, case law that impact the industry or goals of the organization
    • Represent organization with external coalitions, allied organizations, and contributing employers; and
    • Participate in internal Coordination Team 

    EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

    • Life experience with the janitorial industry or other low wage industry and five or more years of work experience in investigation, advocacy, or organizing;
    • Fluent in Spanish and English;
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills in both languages;
    • Commitment to transformational change, worker rights, civil rights and social justice;
    • Excellent organization, communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills;
    • Mastery of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc);
    • Experience working in diverse environments;
    • Prior experience with database use and maintenance preferred;
    • Ability to work long and irregular hours and travel throughout the Country;
    • California Driver’s License, Car insurance and reliable car required.
