    Director of Operations

    **This is a Full-Time, Hybrid (Remote/Office) Position**

    Overall Position Description

    The New England Innocence Project (NEIP) is a small non-profit organization dedicated to correcting and preventing wrongful convictions and supporting the victims of wrongful conviction throughout the six New England states. We represent people with claims of innocence and use litigation, training, public education, and policy efforts to create systemic change in the criminal legal system. We endeavor to approach our work with an anti-racist and intersectional lens, and we use consensus-based decision making where possible. We recognize that the criminal legal system and the carceral state are shaped by white supremacy and capitalism. We see our work as an opportunity to challenge and undermine the system's drive for punishment, especially in marginalized communities.

    The Director of Operations is a new role within our organization. Working with the Executive Director and all NEIP staff, the Director of Operations will be responsible for managing daily operations, developing and implementing policies and practices aligned with the values and mission of NEIP, overseeing financial management, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, planning and organizational development, managing hiring and employment practices, and building on the strong community culture of the organization. This position will help build the foundation and infrastructure for the organization’s continued success.

    Beyond the individual responsibilities of each staff member, all NEIP staff work together to support each other and the organization by taking on special projects as needed, and by attending and participating in NEIP-related functions and events.

    Responsibilities & Duties At a Glance

    Reporting to the Executive Director, this position will be responsible for the overall organizational operations, including:

    Managing Daily Operations

    • Oversee day-to-day operations to ensure things run smoothly
    • Review, manage, and develop vendor relationships/contracts
    • Manage logistics and scheduling where needed, especially for events
    • Oversee/approve funding/facilities/technology requests
    • Handle all communications with landlord/property manager
    • Manage all insurance and benefits needs
    • Oversee/manage large administrative tasks
    • Supervise/assist the Operations Administrator, Intake Coordinator, and Case Coordinator to develop and improve processes

    Developing and Implementing Policies & Practices

    • Develop Personnel Manual consistent with organizational values and legal requirements
    • Assess need for additional policies/practices aligned with organizational goals
    • Create checklists/infrastructure to streamline practices
    • Communicate with staff to ensure alignment with policies/practices

    Overseeing Financial Management

    • Develop and oversee the budget to ensure financial stability
    • Monitor and analyzing expenses
    • Establish guidelines for financial management and compliance
    • Present reports as needed
    • Oversee audit
    • Collaborate with the Development team, accounting, & bookkeeping partners

    Ensuring Compliance with Legal and Regulatory Requirements

    • Assess and ensure compliance with requirements
    • Provide guidance as needed to staff

    Planning and Organizational Development

    • Along with staff, set short- and long-term goals for the organization
    • Track progress toward the goals and communicate to relevant stakeholders
    • Identify opportunities for growth and improvement

    Managing Hiring and Employment Practices

    • Recruit and hire full-time and temporary staff
    • Create onboarding checklists and oversee the onboarding process
    • Manage training and development opportunities for staff
    • Manage feedback for staff & personnel issues

    Qualifications

    • A strong, demonstrated commitment to remedying injustice on behalf of vulnerable populations in general and to NEIP's core mission
    • 7 or more years of experience in a similar role involving nonprofit operations, financial management, and organizational development
    • Technologically proficient (e.g., Google Suite, Quickbooks, CRMs) and can navigate and learn new systems
    • Strong leadership, management, and organizational skills, with past supervisory/management experience
    • Excellent written and verbal skills with the ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences
    • Careful attention to detail
    • Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative setting
    • A self-starter who asks questions and seeks clarification when needed
    • Sensitivity to the lived experience of all persons
    • Humility and confidence: no job is too big or too small
    • Values giving and receiving feedback

     Salary & Benefits

    Salary is commensurate with experience with an annual salary range from $85,000-$95,000. Benefits include paid vacation, sick, and personal days, parental leave, and holidays; individual/family health insurance coverage (medical, dental, vision); and educational opportunities.
