From Tokyo to Times Square: Rina Yamazaki

Join us for an enchanting evening of jazz with the Rina Yamazaki Trio at Klavierhaus on Tuesday, May 27, as part of our Japanese Jazz Piano Series, “From Tokyo to Times Square.” This series celebrates the vibrant musical and cultural bridge between Japan and New York.

Rina Yamazaki, the winner of two awards at the 2018 Ellis Marsalis International Jazz Piano Competition, will be performing with her trio a set of award-winning original compositions, jazz standards, and Latin jazz-influenced pieces that will enthrall jazz fans and novices alike.

A graduate of the legendary Berklee College of Music in Boston, Rina trained under notable musicians such as Ralph Peterson and National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master Joanne Brackeen. Additionally, she became a protégé of Japanese piano master Makoto Ozone, who encouraged her to compose her own music. Her dedication paid off when she qualified for the 2018 Ellis Marsalis International Jazz Piano Competition, where she competed against 160 entries from 29 countries, ultimately taking home Second Place and the Nu Jazz Agency’s Chico & Lupe O’Farrill Award for Best Original Composition. Late in 2018, she was also nominated “Jazz Artist of the Year” by the Boston Music Awards.

Since then, Rina has played and recorded with jazz legends such as Neal Smith, Peter Washington, and Ellis Marsalis, and has performed at iconic venues like Blues Alley and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. She tours regularly in the U.S. and internationally with her trio.
