    Description

    Freedman Consulting, LLC, a mission-driven consulting firm, seeks a self-starter with a strong ability to conduct and distill multifaceted research for the Bloomberg Cities Insights Unit as its Research Analyst. 

    The Research Analyst will join a dedicated unit of content development and research professionals working in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Government Innovation (GI) team to: 

    • Uncover, distill, and produce intelligence that keeps the team and its work at the forefront of what’s happening in local governments; and,
    • Inspire local government leaders to adopt new, effective ways of working. 

    The Insights Unit is part of a 50-person firm that offers strategic consulting services to foundations, nonprofit organizations, and public interest coalitions, partnering with many of the nation’s leading philanthropic institutions.

    The Research Analyst will work closely with the Insights Unit and its partners to uncover new insights to help inform Insights Unit content and GI initiatives and investments. They will be responsible for conducting ongoing research into the field of local government innovation—including trend monitoring, tracking relevant thought leaders in the space, collecting data, and executing other research administration tasks. The Research Analyst should possess an interest in, and enthusiasm for, local government and how innovation can help city governments work better. They also should be digitally savvy, comfortable with data, and prepared to work across a broad range of global initiatives—often in a client-facing capacity and fast-paced environment.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Conducting ongoing research to uncover new insights and strategies in local government innovation
    • Monitoring new research, conferences, reports, and programming in the field of government innovation, and new innovations by city governments, to detect and identify trends for products such as a monthly insights report
    •  Collecting and maintaining data on mayors and city leaders to inform recruitment into training and grant programs 
    • Preparing initial drafts of memos, research findings, and reports including briefing materials for meetings with partners 
    •  Working collaboratively, including with team members, the client, and partners, to collect data and conduct analyses (e.g., analyses of applications for training and grant programs) to draw insights on priorities and trends 
    • Providing ongoing support on administrative functions, including meeting/scheduling administration and coordination

    Qualifications 

    The ideal candidate will have:

    •  Approximately 2-4 years of relevant experience in a professional environment, including legislative/policy, philanthropic, public interest, consulting, and/or research-related fields
    •  A bachelor’s degree in a social science such as government, political science, or public policy or equivalent professional experience 
    • Familiarity with translating complex information into formats that are clear and digestible, with strong attention to detail

    Experience with:

    •  Designing and maintaining spreadsheets (Google Sheets and/or Excel)
    • Using digital sources (i.e. social platforms and AI tools) to gather data and generate research insights 
    • Curating and/or analyzing data (ex: data visualization) 
    • Preparing and designing slides in a professional setting is a plus (Google Slides and/or PowerPoint);
    • Comfort with ambiguity and working in a fast-paced environment
    •  Strong collaborative approach with openness to feedback and direction 
    • An interest in local government and/or public-sector innovation 

    Full salary range for this position is $60,000-$75,000. In addition to base annual compensation, Freedman Consulting offers a comprehensive benefits package and discretionary annual bonus based on individual and firm performance. This position requires in-person collaboration at least twice a week and there will be occasional travel.
