  • About Us

Local journalism lies at the heart of a well functioning community. Democracy cannot thrive in its absence; civic engagement, competitive elections and voter turnout decrease and the lack of transparency invites government corruption. By contrast, where journalists responsibly report the news and investigate complex issues, citizens become armed with the facts that enable robust debate and problem solving for the public good.

Embarcadero Media is a trusted independent and locally-owned media company serving the San Francisco Peninsula and the East Bay’s Tri-Valley region through community websites, digital newsletters, newspapers and The Six Fifty, an online magazine for the 650 area code on the Peninsula. For more than 40 years it has grown to be the most trusted source of news in the communities it serves.

Our mission is to provide high quality local journalism that covers all aspects of life in the region and engage readers on the important issues facing their communities. We are committed to shining light on the most difficult problems and contributing to finding solutions through our reporting. We seek out the underserved or marginalized members of our community so that all voices can be heard.

As the first news organization in the United States to publish on the web in 1994, we have been evolving from printed newspapers to digital platforms ever since. We are developing a sustainable future for local journalism by pivoting our advertising-focused business model to one of reader and institutional support and by expanding into cities lacking good sources of local news.

As a small organization of about 50 creative and passionate people of all ages and backgrounds, we believe in a culture of teamwork, integrity and innovation, where everyone contributes to creating and executing our goals for the future.
