The Role: Program Associate

WAM Foundation is seeking a proactive, organized, and impact-minded Program Associate to support its growing grantmaking toward its mission of alleviating human suffering globally. They will work closely with the Program Director to grow, refine and execute our philanthropic strategy across multiple portfolios.

We are particularly interested in early- and mid-career candidates who have some past exposure to development economics and cost-effectiveness analysis, and meaningful experience working, researching, or interning in a low-, lower-middle, or middle-income country. The candidate should be a strong communicator, diligent and entrepreneurial, eager to learn, and interested in charitable giving or global development.

The ideal candidate will be based in Boston and willing to travel occasionally (domestic and possibly international). The candidate must be eligible to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

The list of responsibilities below is indicative-only; WAM Foundation is a very small startup environment within a fast-moving company in which we expect staff to embrace and grow from a wide range of tasks. The candidate will have a seat at the table at a formative stage of the Foundation’s development. The role will be tailored to what the employee brings to it.

• Think big: Work closely with the Program Director to develop and advance our giving strategy to maximize impact. Research and efficiently diligence high-potential opportunities (both broadly, such as a general topic or theme; and narrowly, such as a specific organization).
• Own the details: Manage current and potential grantees, including coordination regarding deadlines, documents, meetings, diligence, and more (both via email and phone calls). Screen and contribute to selection of potential grantees. Conduct grantee site visits in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and elsewhere.
• Learn, grow, and share: Schedule, coordinate, and document internal and external meetings. Summarize and synthesize takeaways and next steps. Maintain and develop internal systems, including grantee database and website. Communicate our impact to external partners.
