Description:

The Cloud Forest School offers a specially crafted study abroad experience for university students interested in education to reach their full potential as classroom educators while simultaneously experiencing the unique atmosphere of a progressive, bilingual school in the cloud forest of Costa Rica.

The semester-long program involves intensive Spanish training as well as a three month position as a teaching assistant. The student will arrive at the beginning of the semester and be placed with a local host family. The student will spend his or her first month in Monteverde studying Spanish at the Centro Pan-americano de Idiomas (CPI).

Once the intensive Spanish course at CPI ends students begin their work as a teaching assistant at the CFS. Students help with planning, field trips, one-on-one work with students, and other support. Study abroad students are integrated members of the school. They are expected to attend meetings, events, and are treated as professionals. Students learn how to plan and give lessons, evaluate student work and behavior, and manage a classroom.

While assisting at the school students will receive 2 Spanish classes per week, professional development opportunities, and access to academic resources on campus. CFS also organizes a week long trip in September and February to Laguna de Apoyo, Nicaragua during which they take Spanish classes, learn about Nicaraguan culture, bio-diversity, and renew their tourist visas.

Classroom placement decisions are based on a combination of classroom need and an intern’s interests. Available placements change yearly.

The CFS currently has teaching assistant study abroad programs with Swarthmore College, Vassar College, Bryn Mawr College, Haverford College, University of Vermont, Washington and Jefferson College. If you attend a different University and our interested in study abroad with CFS please contact your office of international studies to find out if your University will sponsor you.

Sample plans for earning further academic credit are available upon request.
