Mission:
The Center for the Urban Environment was founded in 1978 with the mission to redefine environmental education in New York City. The Center’s school-based, after-school and public programs bring more than 100,000 children and adults outdoors each year to Prospect Park and dozens of other locations throughout the city to experience and learn about urban phenomena from brownstone architecture, to an artfully designed meadow, to estuarine ecology, or the complex engineering of the Brooklyn Bridge. By teaching children and adults about urban environments, landscapes and neighborhoods, the Center’s programs help instill in them an awareness and appreciation of the city in which we live and communities we come from.
