Description:

The Part Time Adult Literacy Instructor will work in the Family Literacy program in Brooklyn. This person will have multiple opportunities for curriculum development and to become a member of a highly creative team that delivers programming with a focus on literacy development and project-based learning. The ideal candidate will be energetic, committed, and passionate. The Adult Literacy Instructor must be able to work with diverse populations and have experience working with English Language Learners in a classroom setting. The Family Literacy program provides families at multiple Brooklyn sites with an opportunity to participate in adult literacy classes, early education classes, parent resource workshops, and parent and child classes.

The Center for the Urban Environment, Inc. is the largest environmental education organization in New York State. Established 30 years ago, the Center has grown to an annual budget of $4.9 million. Each year over 100,000 school children, parents and teachers, participate in the Center’s unique programming.

Job Responsibilities include:
? Part time up to 20 hours, Monday –Thursday from 2-6pm.
? Developing lesson plans for the adult education component in connection with the Coordinator of Family Literacy and the early education component of the program.
? Tailoring lessons and activities to meet the needs of a multilevel ESL classroom.
? Meet regularly over the school year with participating parents and create written assessments.
? Develop lesson plans that expand students’ awareness of the built and natural environment and promote literacy through community exploration, storytelling, art, and music.
? Assist with PACT (Parent and Child Time) events and PRT (Parent Resource Time).
? Assist Site Coordinator with intake and monthly reports.
? Additional tasks and projects as needed including:
o Occasional Saturdays may be required.
o Participating in necessary trainings and workshops.
o Presenting the program to outside organizations and representing the agency in various venues.

Additional Qualifications:

Requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years experience in ESL, Adult Education. Requires effective oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills and experience in curriculum development. Must be highly organized and detail oriented. TESOL certification preferred. Must be fingerprinted by the NYCDOE. Must be willing to travel locally.
