Description:

Position Summary
Serves as a capacity builder for the local human rights department. Performs interculturally competent administrative work in developing and implementing human rights initiatives in traditionally marginalized communities in order to reduce poverty in the City of Dubuque.

Essential duties and responsibilities
1. Serve as a capacity builder for local human rights organization.
2. Research and develop funding, including writing grants.
3. Network and increase knowledge of stakeholders and issues affecting them.
4. Highlight best practices of ending discrimination, promoting diversity.
5. Participate in statewide VISTA project, networking amongst VISTAs.
6. Relationship-building in Dubuque neighborhoods (e.g., facilitate talk circles).
7. Implement initiatives that bridge gaps between people on the margins and existing employment and education services in the community.
8. Serve as a resource to people of color with culturally competent programs, and assist with building capacity of those programs.

Secondary functions
1. Build relationships with existing state and local human rights agencies and civil rights efforts.
2. Participate and network at local and state (funding dependent) workshops, trainings, meetings, events, and conferences of stakeholder groups (e.g. Chinese Association of Iowa; Latinos Unidos, etc.).
3. Create educational and outreach materials.
4. Translate documents and facilitate interpretation for stakeholder groups.
5. Assist in collaboration between the statewide League of Human Rights Agencies.

Additional Qualifications:

Position specifications:
1. BA or BS
2. Excellent writing and interpersonal skills;
3. Experience coordinating a project with little day to day guidance;
4. Proficiency in Spanish and/or experience in English as a Second Language tutoring
5. Experience working with stakeholder groups.

Internally motivated, self-starter with a current driver’s license and ability to drive; flexible and able to work without direction; sensitive to and knowledgeable of stakeholder groups’ cultures; and able to multi-task.
