Organization
Open Doors Organization
Organization focus: Open Doors was founded in 2000 to create a society in which all persons with disabilities have the same consumer opportunities as those without. By teaching businesses and local communities how to serve the disability market, ODO promotes both economic growth and empowerment of the disability community.
Project
Target audience
People with disabilities, recreation- and travel-related businesses in Chicago
Project Description
Open Chicago is a guidebook designed specifically for people with disabilities. The key feature of the book is the inclusion of accessibility information on each attraction. This gives users the data they need to make informed decisions as consumers, as well as make travel plans with fewer hassles and barriers.
Project Objective
Despite their large numbers, people with disabilities are one of the most unrecognized and underserved populations. In design, stereotypes and misconceptions have let to an over-emphasis on the medical needs of this population, evidenced by the sterile, clinical aesthetic of the majority of disability consumer goods. Open Chicago has two primary objectives. The first is to improve access to and the quality of Chicago travel information for tourists with disabilities and their families. The second objective is to utilize tourism to achieve both local economic growth and social benefit. Through Open Chicago, the project team, Archeworks, and ODO are committed to opening up the city to everyone regardless of disability.
